Frequently Asked Questions

for Students

I bought a new textbook with an access code kit. Can I use the access code for more than one course?

You usually need a new access code for each instructor's CourseCompass course that you want to enroll in.

However, in some cases you don't need a new access code if you are enrolling in another CourseCompass course that uses the same textbook. You need only a new course ID from your instructor when:
  • You are switching to a different section of the same course.
  • You are retaking the same course.
  • You are enrolling in the next semester of a multisemester course.
Note: In these cases, you enroll in the new course through the Pearson Account Summary. For directions, see Getting Started.

I bought a used textbook. How do I purchase access to my instructor's CourseCompass course?

If you did not buy a new textbook, you may be able to purchase a student access kit that contains an access code from your bookstore. You can also use a credit card or PayPal account to buy access to some courses when you register online.

For more information about purchasing access online, see the answer to the following question or
watch the Register & enroll by purchasing online tour.

Can I purchase CourseCompass access with a credit card?

You can buy course access with a credit card or PayPal account when you register online for some courses. For detailed information, see How to register by buying access online or watch the Register & enroll by purchasing online tour.

What will be in my CourseCompass or MyLab course?

MyLab and CourseCompass courses come with many kinds of materials to help you succeed. Every instructor's course is different, but most instructors post announcements, upload a syllabus, and add tests and homework assignments.

Other things you may find in your course are:
  • Video tutorials and demonstrations
  • Lecture notes
  • Animations or simulations
  • Online textbook (ebook)
  • Discussion questions
  • Group projects
  • Study guides
  • Slide shows and other presentations
  • Links to related websites with additional information or activities

Do I need to install any special software or plug-ins?

Some courses offer videos, animations, and other multimedia to help you learn. To use this multimedia material, you may need to download and install additional software (for example, QuickTime). You can open your course to see what kind of additional software it requires, if any. Note that some software may not work in all browsers.

Depending on your course, you may be prompted to install:
  • The player window that you use to answer questions online, such as the MathXL Player, the MyEconLab Player, and so on.
  • Adobe® Flash™ - Needed to run the player window in most courses and to view some tutorial videos.
  • Adobe® Reader® - Needed to view online CourseCompass guides and other PDF documents.
  • Adobe Shockwave® - Needed to view animations in some courses.
  • Apple® QuickTime® - Needed to view the tutorial videos and animations that accompany your course, or hear audio files in any of 30 audio, video, and image formats, including Flash.
  • Java™ plug-in - Needed to view the Virtual Classroom and Chat sessions in CourseCompass.
  • RealNetworks® RealPlayer™ - Needed to watch streamed media animations in some courses.
  • TestGen Player plug-in - Needed to view and take online TestGen tests in CourseCompass.
